We didn’t plan to stop at Almeida, we were en-route to Spain but it was getting late and we were tired. As we approached Almeida we could see it looked an interesting place and just by chance came across an Aire.

The Aire was free and free EHU. Unfortunately the water wasn’t working but all other facilities were operational.
Almeida is a fortified town and it is only 4.5 miles west to the border of Spain. From above the fort walls are the shape of a 12 point star.

The towns castle fortress was completed in 1641 and the town guards the important cross border road from Spain. In the past it has undergone several sieges. We walked around the walls and could see for miles.

Its only a small place and it took us about an hour to walk around and we both found it an interesting place and different to our other stop overs.
