We stopped in Blaye last August last at a vineyard with the intention to have a look around but unfortunately it was too hot so we didn’t get to visit the Citadel or have a look around.
This time we decided to stay in the Aire, which has no services but is located right in the centre of the town and next to the citadel. The cost was 3 euros for 24 hours which we thought was very reasonable.
It is free to enter the 17th Century Citadel which was designed by the famous military architect Vauban to protect Bordeaux from sea evasions. The Citadel overlooks the Gironde Estuary which is the largest in Western Europe.

The Citadel is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We wandered around the Citadel and enjoyed the views. There are a few residents still living within the fortified walls, a couple of souvenir shops and also a campsite!

Apparently, there is a renowned theatre festival held every year in the heart of the Vauban citadel during late August/early September.
The town is also very nice with a good selection of restaurant’s and shops. There is also a market that takes place on a Wednesday and a Saturday morning.
