Riga is the capital of Latvia and also getting a very popular city break destination and it wasn’t very long before we realised why.
We stayed at Riga City Camping http://www.rigacamping.lv/ which was in a great location for us and cost us 25 euros per night. It took us about 45 minutes to walk into the old town. We also downloaded an app called ‘Bolt’ which is similar to Uber for taxis. A taxi back from the city cost us under 3 euros!
Riga’s historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Art Nouveau architecture and 19th century wooden architecture.
The House of Blackheads was constructed in the 14th century and housed a guild for unmarried merchants. It was the most prestigious and grand building in the city at the time. Unfortunately the building was severely ravaged and pillaged in World War II. So in 1999, The House of Blackheads was restored as a precise replica of the original building.
St Peters Church is an imposing red brick edifice. It was originally built from timber in 1209 then rebuilt in stone.
Three Brothers is a charming group of residential houses each from a different century, the oldest dating back to the 15th century. Their name – Three Brothers was given to these buildings because according to legend, the buildings were constructed from men from one family. Nowadays the premises house the Latvian Museum of Architecture and the State Inspection for Heritage Protection.
We also visited Riga’s Aviation Museum which is located right next to the airport. Colin was like a child in a sweet shop. It is full of Soviet Cold War military hardware, civilian aircraft and vehicles. There’s even a selection of Mig Fighter Jets. It cost 7 euros each to view the private collection.
Around every corner in Riga is a street full of interesting and colourful architecture.
There’s a great selection of bars and restaurants. The local speciality drink is a Black Balsam which is an alcoholic herbal tonic which can either be drank on its own or added to cocktails.
We ate at the Fat Pumpkin which is a Vegan restaurant and the food was fantastic.
We had a great few days in Riga and there really is a lot to see and do. We could have easily spent another few days here.
