We were only going to spend a day looking around Florence but we both fell in love with this enchanting City. The City feels very safe and there is so much to see that it took us 4 days and we still didn’t manage to get around all the places we wanted to see. Oh well we will save them so we have an excuse to come back .
The first day we just got our bearings and had a mooch around then headed to Mercato Centrale for something to eat. Now if you visit Florence this is a definite for the list.
This building reopened in 2014 and revives an area of the city left deserted for many years. There is a great selection of foods including fresh fish, fried food, meats and salamis, fresh pasta, wines & beers in fact you can probably get whatever you fancy there! All of the shops are run by artisanal traders who share a passion for their craft so the quality of the food is fantastic.
Colin decided to be adventurous and had a Florence speciality called Lampredotto, which is made from the fourth and final stomach of a cow. It is typically slow-cooked in a vegetable broth, seasoned with herbs, chopped and served in a bread roll. Colin had it topped with a green sauce made out of anchovies and parsley.
We stood and watched a lady making Chinese dumplings. She made it look so simple but you just know that if you had a go that yours certainly wouldn’t turn out like hers. They were so delicious too.
We whiled away a couple of hours looking around and enjoying the vibe of the market. We went back on Saturday hoping to sample some more yummy treats but unfortunately it was closed, so another visit will have to be on our next trip to Florence.

All the wonderful good your sampling is making my mouth water! Apart from Colins cow stomach lining sandwich…..? isn’t that tripe? Used to buy it for the dog………. He,s brave! Your certainly making the best of your adventure, hope your sampling the fine wines to wash down the goodies ( & the tripe?) love to you both xxxxxx
Yes the tripe sandwich was disgusting! It made me feel ill watching him eat it. Yes the local wine is very good too, we have obviously had to try a little bit of that too :-). xx
