A lot of Cartagena’s historical weight goes to its coveted defensive port, which is one of the most important in the western Mediterranean. It is also the home and base of the naval college.
Due to its strategic position on the Mediterranean it has been inhabited by many different cultures and they have certainly left their mark.
The main site to visit is the Roman Theatre. The entrance fee was 6 euros and that included a look around the museum too. The amphitheatre that we were treading the boards on was originally constructed in 1BC and subsequently covered by markets in 3C AD and then a cathedral in the 13th century. The first remains of the theatre were only rediscovered in 1988 with work completed in 2003.
You walk through a tunnel which goes under the Santa Maria La Mayor Cathedral to reach the amphitheatre.
Our favourite Art Noveau building was the Grand Hotel which is now a bank.
The promenade by the marina is also very nice with lots of interesting statues.
You can also visit the Peral submarine at the naval museum.
