San Remo, The Italian Riviera

This area at one time was as highly regarded as the French Riviera and all the rich and famous used to holiday here. So we thought it would be nice to check it out and see what it was like.

We caught the train in from Ventimiglia where we were staying. When we arrived at the train station we were both shocked at how modern the station is, it looks like a James Bond Villains house and the concourse goes on forever. The railway line used to be along the coast but was moved further north and underground to allow for faster trains. The old railway is now a cycle path and stretches 15 miles along the seafront.

We wandered down to the harbour to walk along the promenade and admire the view out to sea. Luckily for us the sun was out and it was a lovely hot day, its hard to believe it is the end of November.

There’s a few sculptures along the promenade and Colin couldn’t help himself climbing up to sit on the over sized chairs.

We then headed up in to the town to have a  look around. We passed one of the most famous landmarks which is the Municipal Casino built in 1905 the building is beautiful example of Art Nouveau architecture.  This was the main reason why the rich and famous used to holiday here. I’m sure the walls could tell thousands of stories.. if only they could talk.

We couldn’t resist sharing a gelato, chocolate and pistachio was todays choices, its so good in Italy and we are definitely going to miss it when we move on.

We had a good walk around the town and admired the architecture. San Remo had a very relaxed feel about it and I am sure we will be back to cycle along the seafront cycle path at a later date!
