Ciudad Encantada which means enchanted city, are heavily eroded sandstone formations along the beach of Bolnuevo. The sandstone shapes are sculpted by water and wind over thousands of years and are considered as a monument of natural interest.
We stood and admired the formations and over the course of the evening they looked magical with the sun setting on them.
The Ciudad Encantada is formed by clay. The yellowish colour is caused by the large amount of sand contained in the clay. Furthermore, the clay consists of micro fossils that date from the Pliocene period, about 4.5 million years ago. The sandstone has undergone an erosion process by the elements which resulted in mushroom and almost vertical shapes that seem to defy the laws of the gravity.
When we arrived we went for a lovely walk along the beach front. There are a great selection of restaurants and the high street is only a few minutes walk from where we parked up. After a nice brisk walk we had a very peaceful nights sleep along with about 20 other motorhomes.
A really nice free stopover, one we are sure we will return to again at some point.
