Castiglione del Lago, Italy… best laid plans often go awry!

We headed north to Castiglione del Lago for a couple of reasons. While we were in Pompei the dogs weren’t able to have any good runs off the lead, so the last thing we wanted to do was head straight to Florence and be back in the same boat. Lily is a lovely dog but if she doesn’t get enough exercise she drives us absolutely insane.

We also wanted to get the bikes off and go for a nice bike ride as we haven’t used the bikes as much as were before we went to Sicily. This isn’t because we have gone off cycling or got lazy but merely for the fact that neither of us felt comfortable cycling on the roads with the Sicilian drivers! Enough said!

So Castiglione del Lago was sort of en route to Florence and is situated on the southwest corner of Lake Trasimeno.

We found an Aire that ticked all the boxes. It was walking distance to the town, right on the edge of the lake which had a cycle path right next to it and plenty of room to play ball with the dogs and we would also be able to walk them easily too.

The lake is the fourth biggest in Italy and just slightly smaller than Lake Como and we could see that it is a very popular with tourists and locals in the summer.

We woke in the morning and Colin didn’t feel too well and by the evening it was clear that he wasn’t going to be going cycling over the next couple of days as he seemed to have picked up a chest infection.

We certainly could feel that Autumn had arrived in Tuscany, the temperature had dropped from 24 degrees down to only 13 degrees on the drive, which was only 93 miles.

When we arrived we could hardly see the lake for thick fog and that stayed like it for the 2 days we were there.

We put the heating on in the motorhome and Colin stayed snuggled up drinking hot lemon and honey while I dressed up warm and made sure the dogs got plenty of exercise.

The Aire was fantastic with all facilities and we paid only 12 euros including electric for 24 hours and it was almost empty just us and 3 other motorhomes.

We had a good couple of nights sleep and then decided that there was no point hanging around any longer and it was time to move on.
