We will be coming back to Provence and the surrounding area next year. We merely stopped in Aix En Provence to break up our journey.
It wasn’t a planned stop, we got delayed slightly by the ‘jaune gillet’ protests. So we lost about an hour and didn’t know if we would have more delays so decided to stop off. That’s one thing we love about motor homing, we can just pull over and rethink our plans en route.
We found a campsite right on the edge of Aix En Provence, nestled in between trees and almost empty. There was plenty of room to let the dogs have a run around and play with their ball so it suited all of us.
There was a bus stop on the main road but we decided to cycle into the City Centre which only took about 10 minutes.
The Christmas market was different to the one we had visited in Nice. The markets seem to be very unique and have proper artisan stalls. We had a taste of a gouda cheese with truffles, it was lovely but when we asked how much for a 200 gram slab we decided not to buy it at 12 euros! It wouldn’t be a proper Christmas market without the traditional food and mulled wine stalls.
We cycled around to get a feel for the City which seemed to be currently undergoing a lot of regeneration work so it was quite hard to take some pictures and stop to enjoy the architecture.
Aix En Provence is famous for its fountains with the largest and most famous being on the Cours Mirabeau which is the main avenue.
This moss covered fountain draws it water from a hot spring.
We did see enough to come to the conclusion that a return visit is a must as the City has a lot to offer and you could easily spend a few days looking around.
