Dune du Pilat – La Testes de Buch

We headed back to the coast to visit the famous Dune du Pilat. Although I say famous we have to admit we had absolutely no idea that this was the tallest sand dune in Europe.

Located in La Teste-de-Buch in the Arachon Bay area which is 60 km from Bordeaux so only a slight detour but worth it.

We arrived at the Aire and frustratingly the barrier would not work even though we could see four spaces ! ARRRGGHHH !

So we had to find another Aire to stay at. We drove a further 10 miles to Biscarrosse … When we first arrived it was very daunting the Aire was huge and nose to tail with motorhomes !!! We drove around and found a nice spot which meant the dogs were able to have a run easily without it being too overcrowded.

Its no wonder this Aire was so busy we discovered within a 2 minute walk you are right on a glorious sandy beach. Its no wonder it was so popular and at only 16 Euro a night including water it was great value too.

We decided not to take the dogs to the Dune de Pilat and I am so glad we didn’t. We didn’t park in the designated car park and use the steps installed in summer for ease, no that would be far too easy. We cut down a side path and decided to walk up what was an almost vertical slope.

The embarrassing thing about this is while we were huffing and puffing, two children just ran up past us! Oh well, we made it up to the top and the view was incredible.

We even stayed there to catch a sunset.

We went back to the beach the next to the dune the following day with the dogs but after about 30 minutes we were still no closer to the sea and the sand was heavy to walk in. So we gave up and headed back as poor old Oakley looked like he was struggling a little.
