We have never been to this area of France and decided this was a good location as the reviews of the area were glowing.
Beynac is located next to the Dordogne river, the village is also classified as one of ‘Les plus beaux villages de France’
We had fun one afternoon when we took the dogs for a walk to the river. It was a glorious day so we wanted to let them have a swim and play but more importantly cool off too. We had forgot to take their floatable toy with us so Oakley decided that the toy of choice today would be pebbles. Not ideal, I know but you tell that to a 10 year old german shepherd who keeps ducking his head under the water and dropping them at your feet to throw.
Beynac is a quaint village with lots of bars and restaurants over looking the river. The true treasure is if you walk up the steep winding road. Stop for a minute and catch your breath ! Then head up the steps to the chateau, the views are amazing. Definitely worth the climb.
We headed off on a couple of bike trips too. We cycled to another ‘Les plus beaux village’ called Castlenaud-la-Chapelle and followed the cycle route to explore. On the way back Colin decided we could take a short cut along the road next to the Dordogne river. We cycled about 10 kms and stopped to see Beynac right opposite us but quite far away! So we had to turn around and go back to where we had come from.
Sarlat-la-Caneda is well worth a visit it has the market situated in the most beautiful building which was formally Sainte-Marie Church and a glass elevator in the bell tower offers city views. The market sells local delicacies like Foie Gras, cheese and walnut oil. A small cathedral Saint-Sacerdos de Sarlat is in the middle of the town with lots of bars and restaurants surrounding it, these offer mainly Foie Gras of some description so with myself being vegetarian and Colin not fancying it again, we decided to pass on having lunch out and just settled for our first ice cream since arriving in France.
All in all a nice few days here in the Dordogne region which we both enjoyed but we stayed a little longer than intended so time to move on with our quest to get East.
